“Keep your eyes forward, and whatever you do, don’t make any sudden moves.”

Flyn sat in a hole-in-the wall bar in the shittiest part of town. The threat hadn’t surprised him, and the fanfare he’d received was to be expected. Earlier, he’d seen the red dot of a silencer. The dot had first appeared on the table. Now, he was confident the mark was aimed at his forehead.

Sitting here while Cirner, his contact, sat in the booth behind him didn’t help his cause. In order to get Cirner’s information and seek out the secrets hidden deep in the guy’s psyche, Flyn needed to see him.

“Rourke convinced me to meet with you,” said Cirner. “He said you had urgent matters to discuss. What was urgent enough to send you across the country to Detroit?”

“This is a meeting best done face-to-face.” He reached for his beer. “A man should see his oppon—” he cleared his throat, “contact. Otherwise, how can he know whether the words he speaks are truthful?”

“Cut the crap, kid. Rourke warned me of what you are.”

Blowing out a sigh, he resisted the urge to slump back in the bar’s booth. He was being watched by the person with the silencer. Rourke was the lead he’d spoken about to Alex. Rourke had demanded a personal meeting rather than a phone call that could’ve saved Flyn time. Apparently, Rourke also needed to see Flyn’s face to gauge Flyn’s true intentions.

Rourke revealing his Seeker ability to Cirner should’ve pissed him off. But with the silencer complicating things, Rourke’s admission simplified his purpose here—to know more about Alex’s mother, Isabelle, and Alex’s twin, Silver, and the after-effects of the poison.

The shot of adrenaline she’d given herself appeared to be a temporary fix. Alex still hadn’t fully healed, and she couldn’t see worth a damn. That made her vulnerable. He didn’t like the thought of his woman being an easy target.

“The life of someone I care about is in danger,” he said. “Rourke believed you can help me.”

“Is this someone a Blade, Ember, human, or demon?”

“What does it matter?” In a perfect world, they’d all be equal, fighting on even ground.

“It matters to me, son. You see, I’ve been burned in the past.” Silence told him Cirner must be doing what Flyn was currently doing—taking a long drink of his beer.

“At this point, I’m not sure,” he admitted. “A few years back, I delved into another operative’s mind off of a dare. What I saw were humans’ deaths. The friend I had thought was a good man was actually one of the chosen executioners. In Rourke’s mind, your image flashed bright. Transposed on your image was the face of someone I care about. I’m here to find out how you’re connected to this someone of mine.”

Gods, Flyn didn’t like talking about Alex in a roundabout way, but he didn’t trust Cirner. Not when he couldn’t see the man’s damn face.

“Rourke reports directly to me. He’s a good man, but chosen?” Cirner scoffed. “Executioners weren’t chosen worth shit.
